Food waste is an increasingly serious issue around the world, particularly in developed countries. Every day, people discard large amounts of food, which could have been eaten but has gone to waste due to storage, transportation, cooking, and other issues. Food waste is a problem not only because of the financial implications, but because of the potential environmental impact. The production of food uses energy, water, and other natural resources, thus when food is not utilized effectively, these resources are wasted. In addition, when food is disposed of in landfills it cannot biodegrade quickly as it would in nature, and the methane emissions it produces contribute to climate change. Fortunately, some steps can be taken to reduce food waste.
