Lighting is a really important part of modern life, not only does it help us to see in the dark but it can also set a mood, enhance the look of a room and provide a level of safety and security. For many of us, lighting is an everyday part of life both in and out of our homes. Embedded flashing traffic lights, overhead streetlights, signs and shop fronts all create a vibrant night time scene. Inside our homes, we rely on lighting to perform a variety of tasks from illuminating a room to provide more pleasant living conditions, to providing subtle task lighting to help us see better at night or for improving our security. Lighting is becoming increasingly innovative, with new technology allowing for energy efficient and low cost lighting solutions. LED lighting, for example, has decreased in cost while still being significantly more energy efficient than traditional incandescent lighting. Smart home technology has also changed our attitudes towards lighting, with intelligent lighting solutions now allowing the user to control their lighting in a variety of ways from voice commands, smartphone apps or motion sensors. Ultimately, lighting is an integral part of our lives both at home and out in the world. It allows us to move about safely in dark conditions, to see more clearly even in the brightest of places and to create ambience to suit any situation. As technology progresses, its clear that lighting will continue to become an ever more important part of our lives.
