Lighting is something that is often taken for granted in our lives. Without lighting, however, our day to day activities would be significantly impacted and even rendered impossible in many cases. As humans weve used the burning of fires for light as far back as our history can remember, but in the modern day we have a much wider range of decorative and practical lighting solutions. Depending on the type of space, different lighting solutions can affect the atmosphere, flow of the room and even safety. Commonly we find ourselves with three main categories of lighting — general, task and accent. Depending on the space and its purpose, different ones of these categories may be necessary or more important than others. General lighting is often considered to be ambient or ambient lighting, as it is the most used type in households and businesses. It lights up larger areas of the room and provides enough illumination for basic tasks. Lastly, we have accent lighting — this type of lighting is used for decorative purposes and to highlight particular areas such as paintings, sculptures, reading areas, and so on. To sum up, lighting solutions are incredibly important for not only practical purposes but also for the atmosphere and look of a space. Without the proper lighting, a place may be too dark, uncomfortable, or too overwhelming and glare may detract from the space. It is therefore important to consider different lighting solutions when planning out a space to ensure that it provides the best overall environment.
