Lighting is a widely used form of energy around the world. Its function is to provide illumination for activities such as reading, writing, work or recreation. Lighting has been used since the prehistoric times where people used simple fire to provide light. Today, advancements in technology have allowed for different lighting solutions. Common types of lighting used today include incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and LED bulbs. Incandescent bulbs provide warm light that is often utilized for home use, while CFLs can be found in commercial and industrial buildings. LEDs, while generally more expensive to purchase, last longer and use less energy than other types of lights, making them more energy efficient. Lighting plays a very important role in the energy sector, as electricity consumption for lighting accounts for around 20% of global electricity consumption. Therefore, proper lighting systems are essential to reduce electricity consumption and reduce carbon emissions. Furthermore, efficient lighting systems help reduce lighting costs and provide improved quality of light. At present, the trend is moving towards more energy-efficient lighting; LED bulbs have become increasingly popular due to their energy efficiency.
