Lighting is an integral part of life. It helps us to see and helps us to move safely throughout our day and night. It helps us to do work, to relax, and to appreciate the beauty of the natural and man-made environment. Lighting in the modern world is a combination of natural and artificial sources. The sun is our primary source of natural light and it is supplemented by moonlight and starlight, with the latter being most substantial outside on clear nights. Artificial lighting includes interior sources such as incandescent and halogen lamps, energy saving fluorescent lamps, and LED lighting, as well as street and area lights powered by electricity or natural gas. In general, lighting serves four specific functions. The first is, of course, to provide illumination, enabling people to see. Secondly, lighting can create atmosphere, such as a comforting ambiance in an outdoor setting. Thirdly, lighting can be used for communication, such as a warning beacon. Lastly, lighting provides a sense of security and safety. Lighting can also be used to emphasize certain objects, either by providing additional illumination or by using a spotlight. It can also be used to direct attention away from an area or object as well. This can be seen in museum exhibitions, offices, and lobbies where certain objects need to be made more prominent, while others need to be set aside. These days, the most advanced and energy efficient means of generating light is LED lighting. LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) use only a fraction of the energy required by traditional lighting methods and last for up to ten times longer. LEDs are also far more flexible in terms of design and shape than other lights. Finally, lighting has become much more than just a functional utility. Modern lighting designers have created various lighting solutions that can bring a new level of artistry and beauty to a home or public space. Lighting has come a long way since the days of basic flame and lanterns and it will continue to evolve as technology advances and our needs and wants change.
